How to Record Streaming Audio
Laws regulating the recording of songs for personal use are a little complex, but this much is straightforward: You can’t record, copy and distribute copyrighted material. Now that we got that out of the way, check out:
Windows
Total Recorder is a cheap ($17.95 for the standard edition with a free trial download) software program that will record anything that plays through your speakers. It’s like turning on a cassette recorder while the CD player or the radio is on. Digital rights protection and copy prevention built into a song file? Forget that: Just play the song and record it.
Recording
Creative InternetLabs Audioincludes ona similar recording utility, Creative Mediasource Player, for free with some of its portable audio players and SoundBlaster sound cards.
Mac OS X
RadioLover lets you record multiple MP3 streams at the same time, and splits the streams by track title into individual songs. It's cheap at only $15, and is a free download you can use for upto 30 minutes. It also features scheduling, and recordings are iPod friendly.
iRecordMusic is an innovative recording solution. It's a web browser which can record any audio being played on a web page or via a stream. It can record RealAudio, WindowsMedia, Flash, MP3 audio and more. You can record as AIFF (great for editing), MP3, MP4 AAC (the format used by iTunes Store). Download and check it out. It also features scheduling, and recordings are iPod friendly.
